Fill the roof with panels

Fill roof (X) places as many panels as fit on every face that doesn’t face north — around fire setbacks, pathways and obstacles. Fill this face with panels does one face, north-facing ones too. Pick Best fit, Portrait or Landscape first.

Fill roof does in a second what takes minutes by hand. Most layouts start with it and then get a few panels moved or removed.

Before you start

Fill the whole roof

  1. Open Panels and pick the orientation

Press Panels (N). Best fit picks, face by face, whichever fits more panels; Portrait puts the long side down the slope; Landscape puts it along the eave.

  2. Press Fill roof

Press Fill roof (X) or X. The first time, Cali-Graf also looks for chimneys and vents. Then it fills every face except those facing north, keeps out of the setbacks and away from obstacles, and adds the fire pathways the roof still needs.

  3. Read the result

A message says how many panels went on, and the card shows the total, like 22 panels · 9.46 kW DC · 32% of the roof.

One face at a time

Select a face and press Fill this face with panels — this also works on north-facing faces, which Fill roof skips. Sun on this face next to it tells you whether the face is worth it. To empty one face, use the clear button in the face’s settings.

Start over

Clear removes every panel (⌘Z brings them back). Pressing Fill roof (X) again replaces the panels on the faces it fills — moves you made by hand on those faces are lost.
