Edge types: eave, rake, ridge, hip, valley
Every edge of the roof has a type — eave, rake, ridge, hip, valley, wall or pitch change. Cali-Graf sets it from the shape and the Google heights; select an edge to see why and to change it. The type sets the fire setbacks and pathways.
Fire rules are written per edge: so many inches from the ridge, a pathway along a rake or a hip. To apply them, the editor needs to know what every edge is.
The types
- Eave
The level bottom edge of a face, where the gutter is.
- Rake
A sloped outer edge — the side of a gable.
- Ridge
The level top edge, where two faces meet at the peak or a face ends at the top.
- Hip
A sloped edge where two faces meet and slope away from it.
- Valley
A sloped edge where two faces slope toward each other.
- Wall
Two faces meet at different heights — a wall rises between them.
- Pitch change
One face continues into the next at a different pitch.
Check or change an edge
Select the edge
Pick Select and click an edge. Its settings show the length and the type, with the reason — for example “Automatic: Valley — both faces slope toward it”.
Pick another type if it’s wrong
Press the right type. The edge is now set by hand; Back to automatic returns it to Cali-Graf’s choice.
With Roof picked, Roof edges on the right lists the edges by type with their colors on the roof.
