Choose the inverter
In Inverter, pick a microinverter, a string inverter or a hybrid like Powerwall 3, or search the whole CEC list. The generic inverter is fine for a first estimate, but the proposal needs the exact model.
The inverter turns the panels’ DC power into the AC power the home uses. Its efficiency and its limit — how much it can put out at the sunniest moment — change the yearly production a little, and the proposal lists it by name.
Pick the inverter
Open Inverter
In the calculator, open Inverter. Until you choose one, the calculation uses Generic inverter (96%) — typical efficiency and clipping.
Choose from the list or search
Pick a model, or type in Search all CEC inverters — for example “IQ8HC” or “SolarEdge”. Models that fit the panel are marked Works with — see Equipment compatibility check.
Set the number of string or hybrid inverters
With a string or hybrid inverter, type how many units the panels feed in Inverters taking solar input. For Powerwall 3 the number comes from Battery. Microinverters need nothing — there’s one under every panel.
The three kinds
| Kind | How it works |
|---|---|
| Microinverter | One small inverter under each panel, like Enphase IQ8. A shaded panel doesn’t hold back the others. |
| String inverter | One box on the wall takes the DC from rows of panels. |
| Hybrid | A string inverter and a battery in one unit, like Tesla Powerwall 3. |
